Volume

Valuation date. Most funds are valued daily but some are valued weekly, monthly or quarterly. It is important to know when a fund is valued, because that determines when you can buy or redeem a fund. Generally your redemption or purchase order must reach the fund prior to close of business on a valuation day.

Variable return. A mixture of securities whose future flows are not fixed or known with certainty. Within the variable return definition there are shares, convertible obligations and participations in investment funds.

Variance. A measure of the average distance between each of a set of data points and their mean value; equal to the sum of the squares of the deviation from the mean value.

Volume. The number of shares, bonds or contracts traded during a given period, for a security or an entire exchange. Also called trading volume.
