Redemption charge. The recovery of what is mortgaged or pledged. The payment of a debt or obligation; specifically, the paying of the value of its notes, warrants, etc. by a government.

TOP

Relatively Strong Index (RSI). A technical analysis indicator, which measures the magnitude of gains over a given time period against the magnitude of losses over that period. The equation is RSI = 100 - 100 / (1 + RS) where RS = (total gains / n) / (total losses / n) and n = number of RSI periods. The value can range from 1 to 100. Some technical analysts believe that a value of 30 or below indicates an oversold condition and that a value of 70 or above indicates an overbought condition.

TOP

Repo. A contract in which the seller of securities, such as Treasury Bills, agrees to buy them back at a specified time and price. Also called repurchase agreement or buyback.

TOP

Resistance. Inability of an asset (be it a stock, bond or currency) to rise above a certain price (resistance level).

TOP

Returns On Equity (ROE). A measure of how well a company used reinvested earnings to generate additional earnings, equal to a fiscal year's after-tax income (after preferred stock dividends but before common stock dividends) divided by book value, expressed as a percentage. It is used as a general indication of the company's efficiency; in other words, how much profit it is able to generate given the resources provided by its stockholders. Investors usually look for companies with returns on equity that are high and growing.

TOP

Revaluation. A change, usually an increase, in a country's fixed exchange rate.

TOP

Risk aversion. Refers specifically to the behavior of investors: suppose an investor does not like to take risks – therefore for that investor to accept to taking more risk in an investment, he needs to anticipate a greater return.

TOP

Risk free asset. An asset whose future return is known with certainty. The risk-free asset is commonly defined as short-term obligations of the US government.

TOP

Risk Premium. The reward for holding a risky investment rather than a risk-free one.
