Market Capitalization. Represents the aggregate value of a company or stock. It is obtained by multiplying the number of shares outstanding by their current price per share.

TOP

Market Price. In the case of a security, market price is usually considered the last reported price at which the stock or bond is sold.

TOP

Market Risk. Risk which is common to an entire class of assets or liabilities. The value of investments may decline over a given time period simply because of economic changes or other events that impact large portions of the market. Asset allocation and diversification can protect against market risk because different portions of the market tend to under perform at different times. Also called systematic risk.

TOP

Maturity. The date at which a loan or bond or debenture comes due and must be redeemed or paid off.

TOP

Monetary Depreciation. A decline in the value of a given currency in comparison with other currencies. For instance, if the U.S. dollar depreciates against the peso, buyers would have to pay more dollars in order to obtain the original amount of pesos before depreciation occurred.

TOP

Money Market Fund. A type of mutual fund that invests primarily in treasury bills and other low-risk, short-term investments.

TOP

Moving Average. A technical analysis term meaning the average price of a security over a specified time period (the most common being 20, 30, 50, 100 and 200 days), used in order to spot pricing trends by flattening out large fluctuations. This is perhaps the most commonly used variable in technical analysis. Moving average data is used to create charts that show whether a stock's price is trending up or down.

TOP

Mutual Fund. An investment entity that pools shareholder or unitholder funds and invests in various securities. The units or shares are redeemable by the fund on demand by the investor. The value of the underlying assets of the fund influences the current price of units.
